VIETNAM COLD CHAIN                                                                                   


Strong foreign infrastructure and logistics activity signal that Vietnam should be a growth market, though government regulatory concerns keep it on the lower end of this year’s Top Markets rankings. Vietnam’s organized retail sector is at the beginning stages of growth, and most retailers and cold chain operators are continuing to monitor the development of the market. Food spending is expected to increase on average by 10.5 percent annually to reach over $31 billion by 2020. There is a traditional preference to eat fresh products, leaving the frozen food segment fragmented. The entry of major retailers with supermarket models combined with increasing exports of farming and seafood products are expected to drive demand for cold chain services. The estimated $46 billion franchise sector in Vietnam is very popular and well suited for the developing economy. American food and beverage franchise brands have become big players in the market, as Vietnamese consumers associate western brands with quality and lifestyle. With internet penetration at more than 45 percent, e-commerce in Vietnam has grown substantially over the last five years to reach nearly $4.2 billion in 2015 and accounts for 2.1 percent of all retail sales, according to the Vietnam E-Commerce and Information Technology Agency. The average shopper spent $165 online. Across Asian nations, there has been a trend toward purchasing groceries and food products online. This may represent a great opportunity for cold chain service providers, as the emergence of online shopping for groceries should create additional demand for refrigerated delivery and warehouses near major population centers. Pharmaceutical sales in Vietnam are estimated at $4.2 billion and are anticipated to increase at a compound annual growth rate of over 12.5 percent to reach around $7.6 billion by 2020. Vietnam represents an attractive opportunity for refrigerated logistics service providers to serve the growing pharmaceutical industry. Trade routes through Vietnam have increased airfreight imports from the United States by an average of 19.2 percent since 2005, providing opportunities for express delivery services within the country. Vietnam’s agribusiness market is expected to grow to $51 billion by 2020. It is estimated that this year, Singapore’s dairy imports from the United States will be around $1 billion, though most of that will be in dry powder form, which does not require refrigeration. The poultry market sources its imports primarily from Brazil and the United States and expects to import 75 metric tons of U.S. poultry this year. The Vietnamese market will import 20,000 metric tons of beef and 3,000 metric tons of pork from the United States this year. The Vietnamese government has taken a proactive step to promote cold chain infrastructure by introducing financial incentives to attract foreign investment. Foreign logistics firms have a strong presence in Vietnam, capturing 80 percent of market share worth $48 billion. While ocean shipping services are dominated by joint ventures, domestic firms mostly handle road-shipping services. Cold chain has been identified as one of the key growth opportunities for foreign investors in Vietnam, an area where there has been significant international investment. Vietnam’s quality of transport infrastructure is ranked 67out of 140 countries in the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness index. Every category of transportation infrastructure has improved since 2011, though the quality of roads and the overall quality of the transport infrastructure is very low. The refrigerated products and services industry would be wise to monitor the state of bulk rail shipping in Vietnam to determine the market opportunity for both refrigerated rail cars and refrigerated warehouses at intermodal links and trans-shipment hubs. The cold storage market in Vietnam is over-built for current operations. “The organized retail sector is just starting to take off, and thus, most players are keeping an eye on the situation. Eric Prieur serves as Cold Chain Sustainability Director at Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems that include cold storage, transport refrigeration, food retail and temperature monitoring solutions. His responsibilities are to help expand and strengthen the cold chain globally, conduct field studies in developing countries and organize the annual World Cold Chain Summit to reduce food loss. Carrier is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. Eric holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from INSEAD.                                                                                                                                          




Chris Catto-Smith, Director, Fresh Ports








Chris Catto-Smith, is the Advisor of Vietnam Supply Chain, focusing on retail supply chain, perishable & time sensitive logistics. With 30y experience in a broad range of supply chain & logistics management & consulting roles. He has successfully led & managed high visibility Supply Chain projects in Asia & has held senior logistics & technology management positions including Sth Asian Distribution Manager IBM, VP Logistics Tops Supermarkets (Asia Pacific), Regional Distribution Manager Coles Myer (Australia). Chris spent 18 years in the Australian Air Force as a Logistics Officer involved in a wide range of logistics & transport, aviation management, combat logistics & humanitarian aid roles. Chris has managed various food chain and retail logistics improvement projects in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. He has deep experience in the implementation of new logistics facilities and service provider operations. He has undertaken mid to long term assignments with retailers in developing & integrating new logistics capabilities. Over the past 6 years Chris developed a unique perishable handling solution providing unbroken cold chain for fresh & temperature sensitive aircargo shipments & retail store deliveries. Chris has recently completed a long term fresh produce development project to a leading International retailer in Vietnam. He holds Masters Degrees in both Systems Engineering & Logistics Management with post-graduate diplomas in Business & Aviation Management. He is a certified Management Consultant of the International Institute of Management Consulting. Chris recently spent 18 months in China working as SCM program manager for a Fortune 500 retailer undergoing complete restructuring and improvement of Supply Chain, distribution & Instore Logistics functions.


Philippe Ruffier, VP Supply Chain, Mundi Pharma


Philippe Ruffier has 20 more year experience in Supply Chain in Asia. He worked for Accenture for 3 years, Michelin for 8 years as the head of SC Asia for passenger cars, in Johnson and Johnson  for 7 years in various local and regional Director positions, and for Mundipharma since February 2015 where he is responsible for the end-to-end Supply Chain for Consumers business in Asia, Middle-East and Latin America, with exposure to the pharmaceutical planning and Operations  for the 3 regions. He lived and worked in various countries in Asia,  including Singapore, Vietnam, China, Japan, Australia and Thailand, and gained country management exposure in Vietnam.  His strengths are mainly in direct procurement, local and integrated regional planning optimisation.Philippe hold a MBA from Manchester business School and various professional accreditations in Supply Chain.


Eckart Dutz, General Director, Pacific Partners & Uncle Bill



Eckart is General Director of Rapi B2B Office Solutions (formerly Cartridge World (since 2006)). He came to Vietnam in 1995 and has worked from 1996 - 2004 for Unilever in Vietnam, Thailand, Netherlands, Germany in various Supply Chain positions. Most recently as Regional Supply Chain Manager for Ice Cream for South East Asia. Next to Rapi, Eckart is also General Manager of Pacific Partners (VN) (since 2004), a Sourcing Company specialized in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (Food and Nonfood). That includes export activities to Markets in the Pacific Islands as well as the import of Nonfood products (Sole agent for UBL China) to Vietnam. Most recently he has launched the first Discount Stores under the "Uncle Bills" Brand in Ho Chi Minh City. Eckart received a PhD in Supply Chain Management from Mannheim University (Germany) and a Diploma in Business Administration as well as a Post Graduate Degree (Lic.rer.pol.) in International Economics. He is Co-Founder of the Vietnam Supply Chain Community and previously on the Boards of Advisors of the Vietnam Supply Chain Council as well as an Advisor to the Sourcing & Purchasing Club Vietnam. Furthermore he is Lecturer for the Executive MBA Programs of the RMIT and the Vietnam National University.

Cold Chain for Fruits & Vegetables: Results of a Pilot Study in India
The presentation will share the recent results of a cold chain pilot study in India. It was conducted by the Indian School of Business under guidance from the National Center for Cold-chain Development and Carrier Transicold India to examine the extent to which the cold chain can help increase the value of kinnow, a citrus fruit rich in micronutrients and common to the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, by enabling sales out of season and in distant markets while reducing post-harvest loss and lowering carbon emissions from that loss. The study also provides a general framework for aggregators and distributors to analyze profitability for any crop when using the cold chain.

All registrations are tentative until full payment is received.
Payment will be paid in Vietnam Dong to the assigned bank account.
All payment expected to be received before the event date. If for any reasons that the payment can’t be received before the informed deadline, registrants will have to notify VSC in written and agree to sign in the “Payment Confirmation” document. If payment is late in accordance to the informed deadline when the course has been completed, registrants shall be charged a penalty of 1.5% per month on the overdue amount from the due date until paid.
The official invoice (red invoice) will be issued to registrants on the event day under the condition that the payment is paid and is requested in advance.
In case of cancellation before the event date, registrants have to inform VSC in written notice at least 10 working days prior to cancellation date. In case of failure to notify the cancellation, the violation party has to pay a penalty as follows:

     - 50% of total amount for cancellation 5 - 10 working days prior to the event date

     - 100% of total amount for cancellation less than 5 working days prior to the event date

In case that the event is cancelled by VSC, registrants will be refunded all the received payment within 07 days since the written announcement of cancellation or be rescheduled as mutual agreement.
